Google PageRank Update: November 2012

Last night, Google started pushing out new PageRank data to the Google Toolbar users (if you can find any one using the toolbar anymore).

There is discussions about the PageRank update happening at DigitalPoint Forums and WebmasterWorld. In fact, DigitalPoint has a dozen threads on the topic.

The previous PageRank update was done in August 2012 and typically occurs ever few months or so.

Despite PageRank still being part of the algorithm, SEOs know that toolbar PageRank is often outdated and not that useful. In addition, there are many other factors part of the algorithm that may or may not be as important as PageRank.

Hobo has a list of some major sites that were updated with this PR update.

I hope your PageRank increased and did not decline at all – ego is an important thing.

Page Quality, Local & Ranking Changes Top List of 65 Latest Google Search Updates

Google’s most recent installment of their search quality highlights is out, listing more than 65 changes to the search algorithm from August and September.

Most are decidedly minor, a few stand out, and a couple major changes we know about seem to be missing entirely. Specifically, there is nary a word about the exact match domain update Google warned of on September 27. Why is this?

“These changes rolled out very recently, and their launch language was approved after the cutoff date where we were finalizing the blog post,” a Google spokesperson told Search Engine Watch. “We tweeted these changes and were also planning to include those launches in future updates.”

We know for certain a Panda update occured on September 27. We also know there was a Panda data refresh Sept. 18, though Google announced that one via Twitter.

Perhaps this September change entry applies to Panda: “#84394. [project ‘Page Quality’] This launch helped you find more high-quality content from trusted sources.”

Google has filed algorithm changes related to Panda and Penguin under the “Page Quality” project in the past, as they did in May of this year. It’s vague, but this entry may very well refer to the September 18th or 27th Panda update.

Keep in mind, Matt Cutts’ tweet from September 28 said the EMD update was “upcoming.” Some believe it happened September 27 or 28, though they could very well have mistaken it for Panda.

To my knowledge, there has been no official confirmation the EMD update came out at the time of Cutts’ tweet. We’ve asked Cutts for clarification and will update the post if we hear back.

Do More Twitter Followers Help SEO?

I am the last person who would wish to promote a “Twitter follower-frenzy”, so I almost hate to say this. Many indicators will suggest that more followers on Twitter can improve the SEO value of a tweet. Yes, a high follower count does correlate to higher SEO value, but I believe it correlates even better with the number of Twitter lists a person is on and other measurements.

I know that a lot of people want to become popular on Twitter, but before you implement some off the cuff plan, be sure to read the article titled “How To Become Popular on Twitter Without Actually Being Useful“. If you do the things that many moronic marketers suggest, people will wish a bad case of herpes on you and throw you on a flaming bed of nails before they will care to listen to you … or buy your stuff.

The important factor is being useful and giving people what they want.

There is not much that I dislike more than a bunch of bad marketers out there with nothing useful to say. I think that millions of Twitter users would agree with me on this. Don’t take this as any suggestion that you go and try to gather as many Twitter followers as you can. Instead, I recommend, as I always have, that you be useful. As with anything SEO-related, being useful and providing compelling information is what matters the most. If you can do that, many of the other factors seem to magically fall into place. I am pretty sure it can also help hemorrhoids, even better than ice cream.

Search engines don’t want the same content littering their results. It makes no sense for them to present the exact same page multiple times for the same query. Unfortunately most content management systems create multiple URLs for accessing the same content. Categories, tags, and search results all lead to the same content being found through multiple URLs.

You might want to block some of the URLs from being indexed though a robots.txt file, or through the use of the meta robots tag (use noindex, follow so links on the page can still be crawled) or use 301 (permanent) redirection to point the duplicate URLs to your URL of choice. If you allow search engines to decide which URL to index it may not be the one you prefer. The canonical attribute on link tags is another option to help search engines determine which URL is the one you want indexed

You also want to make sure that every page on your site has unique content. Many ecommerce sites will have very thin product information. For example one product might come in several different sizes and each size gets its own page. The content on those pages will likely be exactly the same with the exception of the different sizes. Search engines are not likely to rank all of those pages. They’ll choose one. Better would be to create a single page and allow for a choice of size on that page. If each size must have it’s own page rewrite some of the content to increase the percentage of uniqueness on each.

Five New SEO Tips for 2011

Google made changes to the SERP real estate in 2010, and these changes caused organic listings to get pushed further and further down the page. Therefore, the SEO tactics that emerged in 2010 (to combat these changes) will be even more important in 2011 (and as always, make sure you get the SEO basics right, too).

Keyword Research

“This is the foundation of SEO and increasing your ranking on Google and the major search engines,” Lama said. “Once you created or switched over your site to WordPress, you want to do some keyword research. Look for at least three relevant keywords you want to target.”

Onsite Optimization

“Once you’ve identified those highly searched keywords, sprinkle them onto your site and spread them around in various places,” Lama said. “You don’t want to stuff them everywhere, though, since this will be considered ‘spamming’ by Google.”

Google Places

“After you have your website properly and effectively optimized for the search engines, you want to claim your Google Places business listing,” Lama said. “You do this adding basic information about your business and being as detailed as possible in each section. For example, give your complete phone number, address, business description, keywords, hours of operation, etc.  You can further improve rankings by adding photos and asking for reviews of your business.”

Back linking

“Finally, once you’ve optimized your Google places listing, you should be ranking within a few days to a week,” Lama said. “Those rankings occur within the local listings (the top portion of Google where you see the red tabs: A, B, C, D, etc.).”

The job, however, doesn’t end there.  According to Lama, businesses can also boost their ranking in the natural Google search results by back linking.

“My top methods of back linking for local business keywords range from social bookmarking to profile submissions on high page rank sites among several others,” Lama said. “Each of these methods will allow you to create a valuable link back to your site, which will increase its value and relevancy in the eyes Google.”

Search Engines Look to Clean the Mess using Metadata

Google Page Layout Algorithm Officially Updated

Yesterday, Matt Cutts of Google announced on Twitter that Google has officially updated the page layout algorithm that it launched in January of this year.

This is the first official and confirmed update of this algorithm but I do not believe this is the first time they actually ran an update on this algorithm. I believe they ran updates and refreshes to the page layout algorithm before but haven’t told us. Google has been in a telling mood and told us about this data refresh.

Why do I think this wasn’t the first update? Well, when I ran a poll in June about recoveries for this update, 21% said they did recover – and the only way for them to recover is for Google to push out a refresh OR if they webmaster confused this update with another.

Include a <noframes> version of your framed pages on the top level frameset. A page with a completely replicated noframes version is more accessible than a noframes version that simply suggests the viewer get a different browser.
Missing alternative text descriptions for image maps
Put an alt=”text” in your HTML area tags For example:

<area shape=rect coords=0,0,10,10 href=”example.htm” alt=”example”>

This helps people with screen readers know where the image map will take them.
No text only links for image heavy pages
It is a nice touch to add links to text-only versions of your pages. These pages often load faster and when it is text only there is little problem for screen readers.
No descriptive text for audio files and movie files
While audio files improve the web experience for blind people, they are inaccessible for deaf people. The reverse is true for movie files. When there is descriptive text for these types of files, they make the page more accessible to more people.
